Abdominoplasty Complication
|
Question: I need some advise on tightening up the flabby spots. Basically, over
the last 6 months I have lost 30+ pounds, and have about 5-6 to go.
Loosing the wieght isn't a concern - I have done it just revamping my
eating habits and it's working great. I do use the ZONE as a *basic*
guideline, but only that a guideline. I also have a pretty solid
workout program going - I use the treadmil at 3.6mph for 30-40min/daily
and do some exersices with ankle/wrist wieghts (1lb).
What help I need is that I want to tighten the shaky areas in my
thighs/hips and lower tummy.
Can someone give me some advise as to what exersices, etc. that I could
try?
Answer: The purpose of fat is 1)storage of energy for use by other parts of the body to be used at a
later time 2)production of heat.
The 2 types of fat even look different the 1st is yellow/white & the 2nd
reddish brown. The 1st is spread more around the body surface & tends to be
concentrated or increase in size in certain areas depending on age, sex,
race & genetic makeup. The size increase is due to more fat contained in
the same number of fat cells as fat cells do not normally reproduce after
puberty. They can be manipulated in the laboratory outside the body to
divide producing additional fat cells. In the intact body this may only
occur in adults after refeeding from concentration camp type of starvation.
The areas of fat concentration tend to be abdominal in aging men, hips &
thighs in aging women & buttocks in certain races as those individuals
age. The age at which this occurs varies from person to person. It is
easier to lose fat from areas in which your body tends to not concentrate
fat.
Liposuction can be used to alter body contours but not for weight
reduction. When it is
used for weight reduction the complication rates go way up. For example
someone with a
double chin undergoes liposuction. The double chin is gone & they are
happy. However,
on the scale no weight change is seen.
According to present day plastic surgery lore there are 5 types of abdomens
1 - requires no surgical treatment 2 - is best treated with liposuction only 3 - is best treated with a combination of liposuction & a mini
abdominoplasty/tummy tuck 4 - is best treated with a combination of liposuction & a modified
abdominoplasty/tummy tuck 5 - is best treated with a combination of liposuction & a standard
abdominoplasty.
In relatively few cases there is little or no liposuction needed in a
specific patient who lies in one of these categories.
Which category you are in depends on the relative amounts of excess
skin/fat vs. abdominal muscle laxity you have above vs. below the navel.
There are some good plastic surgeons who believe 4 should not exist. Also,
there are probably naturalists, trainers, etc. out there who believe none
of these should exist except 1. My experience & training lead me to believe
that all 5 are valid & that diet & exercise can be combined with any of the 5.
