Liposuction Surgery
|
Question: I just heard that Donohau on MSNBC tonight will discuss the dangers of
extreme dieting. 8 PM EST 11/29/02. I imagine Atkins and diabetes
will be discussed.
How did this show turn out? I tuned in for it, but since they were starting
off with "all about gastric bypass surgery...." and I was having dinner at
the time, I tuned back out!
Answer: The program presented some of the negative aspects of gastric bypass
surgery, i.e., one women's brother that weighed over 450 pounds died a
few days after surgery and about 1 out of 200 dies as a consequence of
this kind of surgery. The surgeon defended this type of surgery since it
was done essentially for health reasons, people had tried other
alternatives to weight loss and were not successful. Then there were
segments on liposuction and ephedra containing products such as
Metabolife. The surgeon didn't think the reasons for liposuction were
comparable to those for gastric bypass since liposuction was largely
done for cosmetic reasons. One women had a daughter that was in a coma
for 5 years following liposuction. Another women in the audience had
liposuction about a year ago and still suffered pain. The surgeon was
opposed to the idea of liposuction surgery in a doctor's office as
opposed to in a hospital. Then there was a women who had been on
Metabolife for six months and suffered a stroke. Then there was a
nurse-dietician type that said that none of the procedures dealt with
the underlying psychological problems related to food. Other health
issue such as cardiovascular and diabetic diseases were touched on.
