Mini Abdominoplasty

Question:

Those people who have lost a lot of weight, have you had left-over skin that doesn't belong? If so, how have you dealt with it, or with time, has it disappeared on its own?

Having seen surgery on a TV show to get rid of excess skin on a lady who lost a lot of weight, I'm curious how others are dealing with the problem.

Answer:

I'm 35 years old, female, and have lost 100 pounds and maintained a normal weight for over two years now. There's quite a lot of leftover skin, especially in the lower abdominal area. Years of exercise have returned the strength and proper position of the rectus abdominus, and when I can afford the surgery my plan is to have the excess skin removed ( a simple abdominoplasty - the rectus abdominus won't be touched). Actually, everything between the navel and a point 8 inches down my upper thigh needs to be fixed - front and back. I did luck out with my upper arms, though. Even though I can't wear sleeveless clothing (stretch marks) when I wave to someone my upper arm doesn't continue to do so when I stop. For the present I just deal. What's the alternative?

The first time I went lo carb I lost 100 lb or so and was very unhappy with the skin left behind. I was 31 years old, and had a built in mini skirt of skin.

So I had an abdominoplasy where the excess skin was removed. While the surgery was not really pleasant, the results were good, or at least better than the before shot. Without being discouraging it would obviously pay to pick a good surgeon if you have the choice. I didn't have choice as I got this done under the public hospital system in Australia which means no choice of doctor, but I didn't have to pay either.

I can understand having reservations about surgery and really have to say it all depends on WHAT YOU WANT and how you feel about yourself. While the surgery was a success on one level it wasn't the best job and I did have complications but they were due to poor surgical technique not the actual desire to remove the skin. (they forgot to tie off a bleeder and I bled internally for 3 weeks before they re operated on me to stop the bleeding) And they wondered why I was anaemic
