Surgical Tummy Tuck

Question:

I've had success low carbing before, but got off my "game plan" a few years ago because of stress and gained a lot of weight. I also found out I had Hashimoto's disease (an auto-immune thyroid disorder) and that had a lot to do with my weight gain as well.

I'm back on the low carb straight and narrow again and doing quite well. I've lost 30 pounds with a goal of 120 total to lose. I DID NOT want to go the gastic bypass route. Anyway, one thing I've noticed about gastric bypass patients is that they often have to have plastic surgery (tummy tucks, etc.) after their drastic weight loss. Mine won't be quite so drastic. I'm figuring it will take about 18 months, but is there any hope that I won't have to have a tummy tuck. It's not so much that I'm opposed to it, I just don't have the money or the recovery time.

Opinions? Experience?

Answer:

You started out at just about the same weight I did. As far as I'm concerned, I won't have any need for a tummy tuck - not at this weight, and not at my goal weight (20 more pounds). No, my tummy isn't flat as a pancake. Yes, I still have fat on it. But I don't have a flap of skin/fat hanging down. I'm quite pleased with the way my body is reshaping itself as i lose weight. Okay, I can still look in the mirror and see (lots of) areas that I'm dissatisfied with, but nothing that needs surgical correction. Yes, I can say that there is lots of hope that you won't need a tummy tuck!

My approach to all the excess skin is to use it as a reminder to me that it used to be filled with fat and what it will look like if I stray too far and foolishly refill the tanks, as it were. I once thought I'd do the tuck it all surgery, but now I'm determined to find creative ways to decorate the loose bits and wear it as a herald of sorts for the accomplishment.
