Tummy Tuck After Gastric Bypass
|
Question: My friend lost 67 kg (almost 150 lbs) after gastric bypass
surgery. She went and had a tummy tuck, later on. The site is in Dutch,
but the pictures speak for themselves. She's in her 30s, by the way, so
it's not an age thing.
Is this normal for losing a lot of weight?
can anyone give us some suggestions?
Answer: If you've ever watched Extreme Makeover, you will note that MANY of the
women who've had kids, even the younger ones who never gained and lost
a lot of fat, end up with a saggy tummy.
However, my clerk at the office, who is 51, weighs somewhere between
350 and 400 lb and she is the same height as me (5' 6"). A month ago
she had a gastric bypass (down 27 pounds already). For sure, when she
gets down to fighting weight, she is going to have a LOT of loose skin
and almost surely need plastic surgery to deal with it. There are
limits to how much your skin can shrink back, particularly when you are
older.
I understand there are some new treatments short of a tuck you can get
from a dermatologist, but I think they only help with a little bit of
looseness, not major sagginess.
I have to tell you though, saggy or not, fear of some skin wouldn't
have stopped me from losing weight. You deal with one problem at a
time, and being fat and out of shape was stopping me from doing things,
it was making me feel lumpy, old and unattractive, and it was bad for
my health. I may not be 20 again, but I feel terrific. The only person
who cares about the skin on my middle other than me is my hubbie, and
he's happy that I'm so happy. Besides which, he ain't 20 any more
either, so if he started picking nits about imperfections....!!
