Tummy Tuck Healing

Question:

I have yet to be offically diagnoised as yet but with much research I believe that I have Lupus. My question is this...I am going to have a tummy tuck done...(I had gastric bypass and have a very large apron). With my having many symptoms of Lupus but not yet offically diagnoised is it wise to go ahead with the surgery? I am waiting for some blood work to come back from my family doctor. ANA and something to do with arthritis.

Answer:

I have a million questions of course and I plan on visiting the links you gave me. Rest assured that I would never go through with this tummy tuck if my health was at risk...I have a wonderful husband and a great son...they mean more to me that getting rid of a bunch of fat! But I want to be very informed. For many years now including right up to the other week when I was in the hospital for pancreititis doctor's have told me that I'm an odd one...my "symptoms" never fit into one diagnoises. The butterfly rash I have and have had for a long time now was told to be syroisis...and the medication I was using was making it worse. My feet and hands get so cold too...here it is August and for 3 nights now my feet have been cramping from the cold. My hands are swollen too.

I think you may have answered your own question. How long ago did you have the gastric by-pass? Chances are if you went through that surgery without a problem you'll probably fly through this one. This time they are not going to be digging around moving parts out of the way and bruising every innard! A tummy tuck although a serious surgery is more "surface".

Also healing time for many lupies tend to be longer due to medications they are taking. And some meds can make surgery much more risky, especially if someone had to have emergency surgery. But a planned surgery, well coordinated between the surgeon and GP (or PCP) probably will go just fine.
